Approves New Vitamin Rules In a ruling on Friday June 22, 2007, the US FDA stated that makers of vitamins, herbs and other dietary supplements taken by millions of Americans must meet new government standards to show the products are free of contamination and contain exactly what the label says. Under the Food and Drug Administration rules, companies in the $18-billion-a-year industry must test the purity, strength and composition of all of their supplements. The final requirements which were announced recently, will not apply to all makers until 2010. In addition to product testing, the new standards address design and construction of manufacturing plants, record-keeping and handling of consumer complaints. Court Rules Against Chiropractors In an ongoing story being covered by COT’s HealthBeat, there has been an update to the ruling in the malpractice case of Bedford v Riello, where a chiropractor was accused of deviating from his scope of practice by adjusting a patient’s knee without linking the condition to a spinal subluxation. After reviewing the case on appeal, the court ruled that the chiropractor’s treatment of the knee was indeed outside New Jersey scope of practice, and sent the case back to the trial court. For years, according the NJ group, the ANJC, the New Jersey State Board of Chiropractic Examiners has operated under the regulation that allows chiropractors to treat the articulations of the spine “and related structures,” thus permitting the adjustment of extraspinal joints. However, after conducting its own independent analysis of the regulation, the court concluded, “The scope of chiropractic practice in New Jersey is limited to adjustments of the spinal column and does not include the adjustment of other joints.” For more information, surf to our Show Notes and also to www.anjc.info http://www.chiroweb.com/states/newjersey.html Changes
in Neck Pain and Active Range of Motion After a Single Thoracic Spine
Manipulation A study in the May 2007 issue of the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics investigated changes in neck pain at rest, active cervical range of motion, and neck pain at end-range of cervical motion after a single thoracic spine manipulation in a case series of patients with mechanical neck pain. Seven patients with mechanical neck pain (2 men, 5 women), 20 to 33 years old, were included in the study. All patients received a single thoracic manipulation by an experienced manipulative therapist. The outcome measures of these cases series were
These outcomes were assessed pre treatment, 5 minutes post manipulation, and 48 hours after the intervention. A repeated-measures analysis was made with parametric tests. The present results demonstrated a clinically significant reduction in pain at rest in subjects with mechanical neck pain immediately and 48 hours following a thoracic manipulation. Although increases in all tested ranges of motion were obtained, none of them reached statistical significance at either post-treatment point. The same was found for pain at the end of range of motion for all tested ranges, with the exception of pain at the end of forward flexion at 48 hours. More than one mechanism likely explains the effects of thoracic spinal manipulation. Future controlled studies comparing spinal manipulation vs spinal mobilization of the thoracic spine are required. spinal decompression therapy Traction therapy has been utilized in the treatment of low back pain for decades. The most recent incarnation of traction therapy is non-surgical spinal decompression therapy which can cost over $100,000. This form of therapy has been heavily marketed to manual therapy professions and subsequently to the consumer. The purpose of this paper is to initiate a debate pertaining to the relationship between marketing claims and the scientific literature on non-surgical spinal decompression. This study, published in the May 18, 2007 edition of Chiropractic and Osteopathy, found that only one small randomized controlled trial and several lower level efficacy studies have been performed on spinal decompression therapy. In general the quality of these studies is questionable. Many of the studies were performed using the VAX-D® unit which places the patient in a prone position. Often companies utilize this research for their marketing although their units place the patient in the supine position. In summary, the study found that only limited evidence is available to warrant the routine use of non-surgical spinal decompression, particularly when many other well investigated, less expensive alternatives are available.
