Note to Self – Clean Adjust Table

A study in the June 7, 2007 edition of Chiropractic and Osteopathy, investigated the presence of pathogenic microbes on chiropractic treatment tables in one outpatient teaching clinic.

The aim of the study was to assess the presence of pathogenic microbes on treatment tables in one outpatient teaching clinic and determine a simple behavioral model for infection control including table disinfection and accepted hand washing and sanitizing protocols.

The study concluded that pathogenic microbes may be present on chiropractic treatment tables and can be effectively killed with proper disinfecting.

Hand washing/ sanitizing is an important measure in infection control as is table disinfecting. Rudimentary behavioral changes to improve chiropractic clinic infection control are needed. More comprehensive behavioral models are needed.

All teaching clinics and private chiropractic offices should adopt infection control practices including routine table disinfecting and hand sanitizing. Effective measures can be put in place at minimal costs. Accrediting bodies of chiropractic institutions should mandate an infection control plan for member institutions immediately.

CDC States About 2M More Americans Uninsured

The number of adults without health insurance jumped by 2 million from 2005 to 2006, according to a new federal report.

Uninsured Americans numbered 43.6 million last year, a 6 percent increase from 2005, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Almost all the increase was in the non-elderly adult population -- a trend attributed to diminishing employer coverage and pricier private insurance.

The change in non-elderly adults was significant, but the overall increase was not, CDC officials said. The overall count of the uninsured has been fluctuating between 41 and 44 million over the last five years and is not really trending up, they said.

The CDC is one of at least three federal agencies that estimate the number of Americans without health insurance. The U.S. Census Bureau puts out what is perhaps the best-known number, but that agency's 2006 estimate is not to be released until August.

Like the Census Bureau, the CDC's estimate is based on a survey. The CDC interviewed about 75,000 Americans last year, asking if they were uninsured at that point in time. About 15 percent said yes, leading to the estimate that 43.6 million Americans were uninsured.

The number was 41.2 million in 2005; the figure has fluctuated between that mark and 43.6 million for the past five years.

Hunger protein links Stress and Obesity

A neurotransmitter that acts as a central controller for appetite also regulates stress-induced obesity in the body's periphery, according to a paper in the July 2007 issue of Nature Medicine. The authors found that abdominal fat increased in stressed mice through the actions of neuropeptide Y (NPY) and one of its receptors. Blocking this receptor's signaling prevented stress-induced obesity.

Previous work has found that stress stimulates NPY release from sympathetic nerves. NPY activity also promotes obesity through central mechanisms, primarily by increasing appetite. Earlier research previously discovered that NPY promotes blood vessel growth through one of its receptors, NPY2R.

In this study, the researchers found that NPY cultured with adipose tissue stimulated the proliferation and differentiation of fat cells. The authors next found that two weeks of daily exposure to a stressor -- either cold water baths or an aggressive mouse -- increased both NPY levels and abdominal fat deposits in mice fed a diet high in sugar and fat. Neither stress nor the high-calorie diet alone led to fat gain. Stress combined with the high-calorie diet also increased blood vessel development in abdominal fat tissue.

Daily stress boosted the degree of fat gain and induced several symptoms of metabolic syndrome, including lipid accumulation in the liver and skeletal muscle, impaired glucose tolerance, and hypertension.

Neurotransmitters are chemical substances which push (transmit) the electrical nerve signal (impulse) over a synapse, which is the space between 2 nerve cells.

Multiple Studies Confirm Positive Outcomes of Chiropractic Care for Whiplash Injuries

The Foundation for Chiropractic Progress, a not-for-profit organization, points to four published research studies which validate that chiropractic care provides significant, ongoing relief for whiplash. Whiplash is defined as an injury to the cervical spine caused by an abrupt jerking motion of the head, backward or forward, often occurring from rear on-set automobile accidents and amusement rides or the result of falls, accidents and sporting activities.

According to the article, Dr. Arthur C. Croft stated that “Nearly one out of 15 adult Americans suffers from the annoying and sometimes debilitating long-term effects of whiplash injury, usually in the form of neck stiffness and pain.”

Dr. Croft cites research reported in the journal Injury (27(9), 643-645) where authors Gargan and Bannister state, “93 percent of the 28 patients studied retrospectively were found to have a statistically significant improvement following chiropractic care. Chiropractic care in this study consisted of spinal manipulation, PNF (Stretching) and cryotherapy.”

Since most whiplash injuries occur from unexpected accidents, doctors at the Foundation advise motorists and passengers to always practice safe driving habits, regardless of how far they are traveling from home.

Health Corner – In this edition of COT HealthBeat’s Health Corner, we a discussion about a recent US Insurance Institute for Highway Safety study on Whiplash Safety of popular trucks and SUVs.

According to the study, two-thirds of pickups, vans and sport-utility vehicles don't provide acceptable protection against whiplash in rear-end collisions.  Some 54 models were rated "marginal" or "poor" by the Institute in tests that involved measurements of seats and head restraints and, in some cases, simulated rear-end collisions.

Twenty-one current models - or 24 percent of those tested - earned the best possible rating of "Good." Twelve models earned an "Acceptable" rating, the second-best rating.
