Changes in postural activity of the trunk muscles following spinal manipulative therapy

A study in the August 2007 issue of the journal Manual Therapy, looked at how manipulative therapy affects posture.

Spinal manipulative therapy (SMT) is common in the management of low back pain (LBP) and has been associated with changes in muscle activity, but evidence is conflicting.

This study investigated the effect of SMT on trunk muscle activity in postural tasks in people with and without LBP.

In controls, there was no change in trunk muscle EMG during the postural perturbation after SMT. In LBP subjects there was an increase in the postural response with some of the muscles studied.

These results indicate that SMT changes the functional activity of trunk muscles in people with LBP, but has no effect on control subjects. Importantly, SMT increased the activity of some abdominal muscles with no change in the other deep trunk muscles which were analyzed, which is often the target of exercise interventions.

Complementary and alternative therapies

A study in the August 2007 issue of Complementary Therapies in Clinical Practice investigated how various types of health practitioners communicate their knowledge about Alternative Therapies.

Nurses, physicians, and allied health professionals at the IWK Health Centre, Halifax, NS, Canada, a tertiary care, regional center for a population of 2.5 million were surveyed.

The authors of the study examined personal attitudes and professional practice in addressing the use of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) use by patients. They also examined the availability of CAM-related information to health professionals.

The findings suggest that health professionals:

  1. are supportive of the use of selected CAM therapies by patients;

  2. have almost no personal experience of CAM;

  3. have limited knowledge about CAM and acquire that information mainly from the Internet, friends or family rather than professional journals;

  4. are uncomfortable discussing CAM with patients and;

  5. rarely or never ask patients about CAM use.

In conclusion, the authors have identified barriers for health professionals to effective communication about CAM use by their patients and families. Improved access to existing policies and scientific publications, and specific continuing professional development opportunities focused on speaking openly and non-judgmentally with patients are likely to enhance accurate guidance of patients in the highly prevalent use of CAM.

Florida Governor Signs Palmer-Introduced Legislation

On June 28, 2007, Florida Governor Charlie Crist signed a bill introduced by Palmer College that will bring about positive opportunities for the chiropractic profession and the Florida Campus. The bill was approved by the Florida Senate and the House of Representatives in May.

This new legislation will provide doctors of chiropractic the opportunity to practice on the campus of an accredited college of chiropractic in the state of Florida as part of their teaching responsibilities without a Florida license, provided they have an active and current license to practice in another state.

Additionally, a second part of the bill, which was suggested by the Florida Chiropractic Association, allows students to sit for licensure in Florida prior to graduation. This is important legislation and will certainly be welcome news to our students.
