Officials deem September ‘Discover Wellness’ month

Government officials from New York and California have dubbed September “Discover Wellness Month,” and wellness professionals nationwide will hold events to celebrate wellness throughout the month.

According to Bob Hoffman, DC, co-author with Jason Deitch, DC, of [ITAL]Discover Wellness — How Staying Healthy Can Make You Rich. [/ITAL], Discover Wellness month is a national campaign to address the underlying cause of America’s healthcare crisis and to raise awareness and encourage participation of all Americans to learn more about what each of us can do to experience greater health and abundant wealth.

In addition to the resolutions, the month will be celebrated by special events and awards sponsored by participating wellness professionals, according to Hoffman. Participating professionals can sponsor a number of events, such as:

  • Mr. & Mrs. Fitness Day;

  • Employee ergonomic workstation evaluations;

  • Interoffice flexibility contests;

  • Writing contests;

  • Free professional exercise equipment demonstrations;

  • Taste-testing, nutrition education; and

  • Free posture analyses.

New Yorkers Lack Health Insurance

According to a report recently released by the NYC Health Commissioner, New York City’s Health Department is committed to eliminating barriers to health care access for all New Yorkers.

Clinical encounters with medical staff are important opportunities for prevention and treatment, yet many New Yorkers face barriers to receiving care.

NYC’s Health Department’s latest report, Health Care Access Among Adults in New York City, examines two important obstacles to access: not having insurance and not having a regular health care provider.

As with many health conditions, certain New Yorkers are more likely to face these barriers than others: Hispanics, men, and younger adults are among the populations at greatest risk of experiencing problems accessing care.

Some of the more interesting statistics from this report include:

  • One million adult New Yorkers, about 1 in 6, are presently uninsured. More than 1.2 million adults, or 1 in 5, lack a regular care provider.

  • Hispanics, men, younger adults, people with low income, and residents of the South Bronx, South Brooklyn, and West Queens are more likely than others to lack insurance and a regular provider.

  • Unemployed adults are more likely than employed adults to be uninsured (26% vs. 18%), but about two thirds of uninsured New Yorkers are employed (approximately 708,000 of the 1 million uninsured).

Insurance and a regular care provider each improve access to preventive care; adults with both receive the most screenings.

  • Adults with both insurance and a regular provider are almost 3 times more likely to have had a colonoscopy than adults with neither (58% vs. 21%); women with both are almost twice as likely to have had a recent mammogram (78% vs. 41%) and about 40% more likely to have had a recent Pap test (83% vs. 60%).

  • Adults 65 and older with both insurance and a regular provider are almost 9 times more likely to have ever received a pneumonia vaccination than those with neither (51% vs. 6%) and recent flu shots in this group are more than 4 times as common (57% vs. 14%).

  • The influences of having insurance or a regular provider on screenings are similar, except for cholesterol screening; adults with only a regular provider are more likely to have had a cholesterol test in the past 5 years than those with only insurance.

Cigarette Use Among Adults in New York City

Quitting smoking is not easy, but thousands of New Yorkers succeed at it every year.

In a new report titled Who’s Still Smoking, the NYC Health Department sheds light on both questions. The report, based on a large survey of New York City adults, shows that two thirds of the city’s smokers – almost 800,000 adults – tried to quit in the past year, but only 17% of those succeeded.

Data from the survey identify emotional distress and binge drinking as possible obstacles to quitting, and finds that less than a fifth of New York City smokers are using nicotine replacement therapy – even though it doubles the chances of success.

People Coping with Pain

Little is known about how people with pain seek relief. To estimate the proportion of the population reporting recent pain, to identify ways people seek pain relief, and to report the perceived effectiveness of pain relief methods, a study in the August 2007 issue of the Journal of Pain conducted a secondary analysis of results from a nationwide survey of the general U.S. population.

Of the 1204 respondents, 31% had experienced moderate to very severe pain within the past 2 weeks and 75% of these had sought medical attention. Only 56% of those who sought medical attention got significant pain relief.

Although seeking medical attention was the primary pain relief strategy, almost all of those with pain had tried multiple alternative methods for pain control, with 92% of pain sufferers having tried 3 or more alternative strategies. People who did not seek medical attention were more likely to report pain relief from prayer and going to a chiropractor than were those who sought medical attention.

Factors leading to inadequate pain relief included difficulty communicating with a health professional and lack of health insurance. People who perceive that their pain is not understood by medical providers and those without health care insurance coverage are at greater risk for poor pain control.

The superior man, when resting in safety, does not forget that danger may come. When in a state of security he does not forget the possibility of ruin. When all is orderly, he does not forget that disorder may come. Thus his person is not endangered, and his States and all their clans are preserved.”
