And Now for some news ….

NJ Chiropractors Under Attack

According to an Email from the ANJC, On Monday, December 12, 2005, NJ Senate Bill 188 was posted to the Senate Health Committee.

This bill sought to limit the performance of EMG, NCV and SSEP studies to MD/DO’s only, and would have completely stripped chiropractors of their ability to continue to perform and interpret the NCV/SSEP studies. To date, the NJ State Chiropractic Board has approved and regulated the performance of these tests by chiropractors.

Representatives from the ANJC went to the NJ State Capital to lobby for inclusion of Chiropractors in this bill and appear to have had some success.  The NJ Senate Health Committee heard their testimony and amended the bill to include the performance of NCV/SSEP studies by trained chiropractors in NJ.

Children’s Diet and Heart Health

You're never too young to eat a heart-healthy diet.

Researchers in Finland report that a diet low in saturated fats boosted boys' cardiovascular health, resulting in lower blood cholesterol and clearer arteries.

The same results weren't seen for girls, but that could change with time, according to researchers.

Dietary Fiber Intake and Risk of Colorectal Cancer

A recent JAMA edition published a study to evaluate the association between dietary fiber intake and risk of colorectal cancer.  Recent publications have created an atmosphere of Inconsistent findings from observational studies have continued the controversy over the effects of dietary fiber on colorectal cancer.

This study concluded that in this large pooled analysis, dietary fiber intake was inversely associated with risk of colorectal cancer in age-adjusted analyses. However, after accounting for other dietary risk factors, high dietary fiber intake was not associated with a reduced risk of colorectal cancer.

Patients should discuss these findings with a qualified healthcare professional, especially in respect to any confusion raised by these studies in recent years.

Consumer Health Information

A recent study in the Archives of Internal Medicine looked at how consumers are gathering their health information.  The context in which patients consume health information has changed dramatically with diffusion of the Internet, advances in telemedicine, and changes in media health coverage. The objective of this study was to provide nationally representative estimates for health-related uses of the Internet, level of trust in health information sources, and preferences for cancer information sources.

The study concluded that the Health Information National Trends Survey data portray a tectonic shift in the ways in which patients consume health and medical information, with more patients looking for information online before talking with their physicians.

High Blood Pressure and Heart Disease

A study in the November 2005 issue of the International Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology found that Women who develop severe high blood pressure while pregnant, a condition known as gestational hypertension, face a higher risk of developing ischemic heart disease later in life, researchers from Sweden report. Heart disease involving ischemia is characterized by restricted blood flow to the coronary arteries.

Previous studies have shown a variety of associations between preeclampsia -- a condition of pregnancy marked by high blood pressure, fluid retention and protein in urine -- and cardiovascular ills later life. This led researchers to hypothesize that the severity of the gestational hypertensive disorder may correlate with the risk for later development of ischemic heart disease.

COT’s HealthBeat recommends discussing any preventive measures with your OB/GYN.

HIPAA Public Comments

The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) published notice of a 60 day extension to the comment period for the proposed rule titled: "HIPAA Administrative Simplification: Electronic Health Care Claims Attachments."  The public comment period will now close on January 23, 2006.  A final rule is expected by the end of 2006.

The proposed rule, published on September 23, 2005, recommends the adoption of a set of standards that will facilitate the electronic exchange of clinical and administrative data. These exchanges, and the standardized data format and content, are intended to improve the claims attachment adjudication process when additional documentation is required of a provider, by a health plan.

Effort undertaken to organize DCs for disaster relief

An effort to integrate the chiropractic community into a national emergency response system is underway. The effort is being spearheaded by company officials of Zonsite, LLC., the company that rallied chiropractic emergency response in Dallas , following Hurricane Katrina in August.

To assess the level of interest and commitment within the chiropractic community, Zonsite is asking you to complete a short questionnaire posted on its Web site, www.zonsite.com.

Cleveland College to teach USC medical interns

The chiropractic community has been asked to join forces with traditional allopathic practitioners in educating the next generation of medical doctors. Officials at Cleveland Chiropractic College ’s Los Angeles campus have embarked on a groundbreaking merger involving healthcare professionals at CCCLA and the University of Southern California (USC) School of Medicine .

The program involves USC medical students who will participate in chiropractic rotations at the University Park Health Center (UPHC) on the USC Campus. During their course of study, the medical students will participate in chiropractic rotations just as they do with surgical, gynecological or dermatological rotations.

While completing chiropractic rotations, the medical interns will be allowed to observe, but not participate in, the discussion, palpation, assessment and adjustment of patients.

Carl S. Cleveland III, DC, Cleveland College president, believes the long-term ramifications of this partnership will be beneficial for chiropractic.
