BBC News Discusses Migraine Headaches http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/4663337.stm

According to the BBC News division, It seems that some migraines are triggered - or exacerbated - by surfaces within the sinuses or nasal cavities pressing against each other.  The brain is confused into interpreting the stimulation as a headache.

It is thought that when surfaces in the nasal tissues touch they stimulate one of the main nerves in the face called the trigeminal nerve.  This may confuse the brain into interpreting the stimulation as a headache - a phenomenon known as referred pain.

NJ Chiropractors and Patients to receive more Medicare Visits….

According to the Association of NJ Chiropractors, The combined efforts of the ANJC Board, its members, and the Medical Directors of Empire Medicare led to the restructuring of the Medicare policy in New Jersey .  According to the ANJC, This new policy includes more flexible clinical guidelines, additional accepted diagnoses, the removal of capped visits and the elimination of the 12-visit screen.  Utilization guidelines for acute uncomplicated conditions will now allow for up to 22 visits during an 8-week treatment plan. Acute complicated conditions and chronic conditions will allow for up to 38 visits over a 12-16 week period. This policy reflects a small step in the right direction.

According to Wayne B. Jonas, Former Director of Office of Alternative Medicine, a division of the National Institute of Health, "Chiropractic has emerged from the periphery of the health care system and is playing an increasingly important role in discussions of health care policy. After a century of both suppression and isolationism, the chiropractic profession is assuming its valuable and appropriate role in the health care system in this country and around the world. As this happens, the professional battles of the past will fade and the patient at last will be the true winner.”

Sprint Training Has Its Benefits

According to Club Industry’s monthly Newsletter Business Pro, Just six minutes of intense exercise a week could be as effective as an hour of daily moderate activity suggests new research, although due to sprint training’s intense nature, most laypeople don’t have the discipline to keep it up.

The full research was recently published in the June edition of the Journal of Applied Physiology.

According to the article who cites Martin Gibala associate professor in the department of kinesiology at McMaster University , “Sprint training may offer an option for individuals who cite lack of time as a major impediment to fitness and conditioning.  This type of training is very demanding and requires a high level of motivation; however, less frequent, higher intensity exercise can indeed lead to improvements in health and fitness."

As always, COT and HealthBeat urge everyone to get a full clearance examination before attempting any vigorous exercise activity.

European court upholds restriction on sale of food supplements

In a move that might influence the sale of Food Supplements in the United States , The European Union’s highest court has upheld proposed restrictions on the sale of food supplements—a setback to critics of the legislation, who claim that it would ban hundreds of popular vitamin pills.

The legislation, which was approved three years ago, establishes a list of vitamins and minerals that may be used in food supplements and lays down criteria on labeling to ensure that consumers are better informed about their contents.

The court’s ruling also insisted that procedures for rejecting a product from the approved list had to be "consistent with the principles of sound administration and legal certainty." It emphasized that a product could be refused only "on the basis of a full risk assessment, established on the basis of the most reliable scientific data."

You may recall that a similar proposal to ban supplements was attempted in the United States in the early 1990’s.

Medicare to offer Free eRecords Software

According to the NY Times, Medicare will begin giving away, free of charge, a version of the computer software known as Vista .  According to the July 21, 2005 article, Vista is a well-proven electronic health record system, that has been used for two decades by hospitals, doctors and clinics with the Department of Veterans Affairs. Medicare will also provide a list of companies that have been trained to install and maintain the system.

Medicare, has repeatedly stated that the lack of electronic records is one of the biggest impediments to improving health care.  An office with five doctors could save more than $100,000 by choosing the Medicare software rather than buying software from a private company.

According to a July 12th Washington Post article on CAM Therapies –

More and more people are turning to Alternative Therapies, such as, chiropractic care, herbs and supplements, out of frustration with conventional therapies.  However, there has been little evidence to validate many of the therapies being used today.

However, that appears to be changing.  According to Michael Irwin, a professor at the UCLA Neuropsychiatric Institute specializing in mind-body medicine, There is a "real effort to use state-of-the-art methodology -- using randomized, controlled trials to determine whether a non-conventional treatment is efficacious or not.

Many consumers aren't waiting for the verdicts. CAM therapies such as acupuncture, herbal medicine, osteopathy, massage and chiropractic care generated $36.5 billion in revenue last year, according to Nutrition Business Journal, an industry publication, up 67.4 percent from 1997, the first year it tallied such data.

In some lighter news, Australian Chiropractor Joseph Hachem Won the 36th World Series of Poker Tournament on July 16th in Las Vegas , Nevada , USA .  The tournament ended with a theatrical finish to a plodding night that had been filled with smart moves and goofy ones by pros and amateurs exhausted by some 90 hours of poker each over six brutal sessions.  Hachem walked away with $7.5 million dollars.

According to Hachem, "A million dollars changes my life, let alone $7.5 million. It changes everything.  Hachem, originally a native of Lebanon who moved to Australia with his family in 1972, gave up a 13-year chiropractic career three years ago to play poker for a living.

He pulled out his cell phone to call his wife in Melbourne and spoke to her briefly.

All the money he won, Hachem said, was secondary to capturing the title of World Series champion and the diamond-studded, white gold bracelet that he can take into every tournament in the future.

"The money's great," Hachem said. "I'd be lying if I said it's not. But the bracelet is the thing. It's an honor and a privilege to wear it."
