HEALTHBEAT SHOW NOTES .... Episode #3 - Recorded August 5,2005

Chiropractic for Many Languages

According to Chiropractic Economics, the language barrier between chiropractors and their Spanish-speaking patients is beginning to come down with the aid of Thomas Bergmann, a professor at Northwestern Health Sciences University , and Thomas Davis, both Doctors of Chiropractic.

Bergmann and Davis recently wrote Spanish Terminology for Chiropractic Care, their third book together. The book is intended to aid chiropractors in communicating with their patients.

The book is available in Northwestern’s bookstore.  For more information, surf to www.nwhealth.edu

Adults Search for Health Information

A Harris Poll, conducted in early June, 2005, found that about three out of four adults go online to seek health-related information.

Most adults who have ever looked for health information online have been generally successful in finding what they are looking for and believe the information to be at least somewhat reliable. Furthermore, many of these people use this information in their discussions with their doctors or use the Internet to help augment the information that doctors provide them.

A new term - Cybercondriacs has been coined to describe these health-information seeking adults looking for health information to educate themselves, as well as to be prepared to discuss the information with their doctors. And about half of them look up information after talking with their doctors.

National Provider Identification Numbers

As a reminder to Healthcare Professionals, The Administrative Simplification provisions of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996, referred to as HIPAA, mandated the adoption of standard unique identifiers for health care providers. The purpose of these provisions is to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the electronic transmission of health information.

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has developed the National Plan and Provider Enumeration System (NPPES) to assign these unique identifiers.

The adoption of these National Provider Identification Numbers will begin to be used for all health plans beginning in May 2007.

Chiropractic Ranks High amongst Consumers

A July 30th WebMD article discusses a recent Consumer Reports survey for best Alternative Healthcare therapies.

Readers were asked to rate the effectiveness of conventional and complementary treatments for their two biggest problems over the last two years.

The consumers' verdict:

  • Chiropractic ranked ahead of all conventional treatments for back pain.

  • Deep-tissue massage was very popular. It was particularly effective for osteoarthritis and fibromyalgia.  Fibromyalgia refers to any of a group of non-joint related rheumatic disorders characterized by pain, tenderness, and stiffness of muscles.

  • Exercise helped a wide range of conditions: back pain, allergies, respiratory problems, rheumatoid arthritis, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, depression, insomnia, and prostate problems.

The survey findings appear in the August issue of Consumer Reports.

As always, COT recommends all treatment options be thoroughly  discussed with a qualified healthcare provider.

Fitness Level Declines Dramatically With Age: Exercise May Counteract

According to WebMD, Everyone’s fitness levels naturally begin a slow decline after our 20s and plummet once we reach our 70s, according to a new study.

But the good news is that regular exercise may compensate for some of those natural losses and help your body feel years younger.

Over time, a person’s Aerobic capacity declines but at any given age someone who exercises will have a higher capacity than someone who is a couch potato.  Aerobic capacity refers to energy production which utilizes oxygen.  Specific types of exercise will focus on developing a person’s Aerobic Capacity.

The study concluded that for older adults, Given the importance of aerobic capacity in activities of daily living, efforts to increase and maintain higher levels of Oxygen capacity (referred to as VO2 max), in addition to participating in strength exercise training, would likely improve their ability to live independently with a higher quality of life.

As always, COT and HealthBeat urge everyone to get a full clearance examination before attempting any vigorous exercise activity
