And Now for some news ….

Lack of sleep linked to high blood pressure

According to a HealthCenterOnline.com news article, Skimping on sleep over a prolonged period appears to be an important risk factor for developing high blood pressure, according to a report in the medical journal Hypertension.

Among the subjects between 32 and 59 years of age, sleeping less than 6 hours per night more than doubled the risk of developing hypertension, the report indicates. Moreover, this association remained significant even after taking obesity and diabetes into account.

Further studies are needed to better understand the mechanisms linking sleep deprivation with high blood pressure, the researchers note.

CCE and Wellness

According to a Dynamic Chiropractic article, counseling patients on habits and lifestyle has long been a part of chiropractic practice, identified by doctors of chiropractic and those who study what doctors of chiropractic say they do in practice.'

The Council on Chiropractic Education standards recognizes that health promotion and wellness are a part of the standards for chiropractic education and wellness. The 2003 CCE Standards for Doctor of Chiropractic Programs state: "Doctors of chiropractic must be able to provide wellness care and to promote health maintenance to perform common screening procedures and wellness assessments in different age groups."

The CCE has approved the following glossary definition of wellness: A process of optimal functioning and creative adaptation involving all aspects of life. Health is a state of optimal well-being and functioning; wellness is an active process employing a set of values and behaviors that promotes health and enhances quality of life.

Chiropractic Emergency Response Team

According to the Chiropractic Economics newsletter, Chiropractic has moved a step closer to being recognized as an official part of the Department of Homeland Security emergency response program.

The infrastructure for the newly founded Chiropractic Emergency Response Volunteer (CERV) team is in its final stages of development, according to Chris Russell, CERV board member and CEO of Zonsite, Inc., the chiropractic marketing technology company that was instrumental in forming the volunteer group in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

More information and registration to participate in CERV can be found at its Web site, www.Ihelpcerv.org, which will be up and running by the end of April.

According to the article, CERV has received the endorsement of the American Chiropractic Association (ACA) as well as the Congress of Chiropractic State Associations (COCSA).

Chiropractic Lobbying Coalition

The Chiropractic Coalition’s 3rd Annual Legislative Day has been scheduled for Thursday, May 4, 2006 in Washington , DC . Lobbying against the passage of S-1955, the small business health insurance bill which we have been talking about for the last few weeks, is a top priority of the coalition, which consists of the International Chiropractors Association (ICA), the World Chiropractic Alliance (WCA), and the Federation of Straight Chiropractors and Organizations (FSCO).

The 2006 schedule will include a kick-off orientation at the Hyatt Regency on Capitol Hill, a Thursday morning issue briefing, and special presentations by key Congressional leaders. The day will conclude with a reception in the LBJ Room of the U.S. Capitol.

CAM Therapy and Heart Disease

A study led by a cardiovascular surgeon from the Minneapolis Heart Institute at Abbott Northwestern Hospital, shows that those patients who receive complementary or alternative medical (CAM) therapies, including music, massage, and guided imagery, before and after open heart surgery, experience less pain and tension during recovery than patients who receive standard care.

The study included 104 men and women who were randomly divided into two groups — one that received alternative therapies at critical points in the preoperative and recovery periods, and one that received standard care.

While heart rates and blood pressure for patients in both groups were similar, the mean post-operative pain and tension scores for patients who received alternative therapies were significantly lower than the scores of patients in the standard care group.

Intellihealth talks CAM Therapies

According to a story from the April 15 edition of the online health newsletter from Intellihealth discussing the role of alternative treatment therapies.  Sometimes, simple approaches work best for those with chronic pain.  The article mentions a few simple and common treatments.

However, many people with chronic pain have already tried and failed these simple options.  The article suggests that for those who do not find relief after making such simple adjustments, you may need to further investigate ways to treat your pain that do not involve drugs or surgery.

The article includes a discussion on various Alternative therapies such as:

  • Acupuncture

  • Biofeedback

  • Meditation

  • Massage Therapy
