And Now for some news ….

Minnesota introduces CAM bill

Minnesota Rep. Jim Abeler, R-Anoka, introduced a bill to the House this session to urge lawmakers to investigate complementary and alternative medicine ( CAM ) and possibly allow it to be covered by the state’s publicly funded insurance program.

Many insurance companies do not fund CAM treatments, but Abeler, a chiropractor, believes that if state-funded insurance programs were to cover the less-invasive therapies, the state could save 10 to 20 percent on healthcare.

Critics of Abeler’s bill say patients would simply add CAM therapies to their existing treatments instead of substituting one for the other, potentially costing the state even more money. However, Abeler says with the current system, most patients only try CAM after exhausting Western medical resources and he says they could potentially solve their medical problems more quickly trying CAM first thus, saving the state money.

Consumer group opposes AER legislation

In a follow up to an earlier HealthBeat news item …. Although a number of parties, including the National Nutritional Foods Association (NNFA), the American Herbal Products Association (AHPA), and the Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN), are in support of the proposed adverse event legislation for dietary supplements, at least one group is opposed.

The American Association for Health Freedom (AAHF) feels that the proposed legislation, S.3546, the Dietary Supplement and Non-Prescription Drug Consumer Protection Act, falls short of the public’s best interests. Despite enduring gratitude to the bill's originators and long-time dietary supplement advocates.

According to AAHF, S.3546 would amend the Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act to require the reporting of “serious” adverse events for both over-the-counter drugs and dietary supplements to the Food and Drug Administration. This is one step closer towards treating dietary supplements more like pharmaceuticals.

Best cities for a practice?

If you are thinking about opening or relocating a practice, statistics from the U.S. Census Bureau may help in your decision making.

According to latest Census Bureau data, Elk Grove , Calif. , had the nation’s fastest growth rate among large cities (100,000 or more population) between July 1, 2004, and July 1, 2005.

Located south of Sacramento , Elk Grove is a relatively new city, having incorporated less than six years ago. Elk Grove’s population increased 12 percent during the period, to 112,338. It was joined on the list of the 10 fastest-growing cities by three others in California : Moreno Valley (ranking sixth), Rancho Cucamonga (seventh) and Irvine (10th). These three cities are each located in southern California .

Florida had three cities among the fastest growing: Port St. Lucie (third), Cape Coral (fifth) and Miramar (eighth). Two cities in Arizona were in the top 10 — Gilbert (fourth) and Chandler (eighth) — and, relatively nearby, North Las Vegas , Nev. , was second.

New York City continued to be the nation’s most populous city, with 8.1 million residents in 2005. This was more than twice the population of Los Angeles , which ranked second at 3.8 million. Phoenix had the largest population increase of any city between 2004 and 2005.

Estrogen-Testosterone HRT and Breast Cancer

According to the Intellihealth.com web site, a new report brings more warnings about hormone replacement therapy -- this time, the bad news is about estrogen and testosterone combinations.

A study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine found that older women taking estrogen-testosterone pills had more than twice the risk of developing breast cancer. The study involved more than 70,000 women participating in the long-running Nurses Health Study.

The overall risk of breast cancer among the women studied was small. But after taking into account risk factors such as family history, weight, and age at menopause, the researchers still found that women taking estrogen and testosterone had a two-and-a-half times higher risk for breast cancer compared to women who did not take hormones.

The researchers say this type of hormone replacement can help with mood, libido and bone density after menopause, but that the cancer risk may outweigh those benefits.
