World Spine Day

Straightening up has become a global issue. On Oct. 16 World Spine Day is taking as its theme “Straighten Up!”, modeled after Straighten Up America.

Chiropractors will have the opportunity to promote spinal health and wellness in collaboration with the Bone and Joint Decade, by teaching spinal exercises and making lifestyle recommendations available in kits from the Congress of Chiropractic State Associations (COCSA) and Life University.

Instructions and educational materials to participate are available at the Web sites of Life University (www.life.edu) and COCSA (www.cocsa.org)

US gets mediocre results despite high spending on health care

According to a new report from the Commonwealth Fund, the United States spends twice as much on health care as a percentage of gross domestic product as other industrialized countries. But it is behind the other countries in providing its citizens with good health outcomes, quality of care, access to care, efficiency, and equity, the report concludes.

The report, from the Commonwealth Fund, a private, non-profit foundation that works to increase healthcare coverage and quality, says: “Although national health spending is significantly higher than the average rate of other industrialized countries, the US is the only industrialized country that fails to guarantee universal health insurance, and coverage is deteriorating, leaving millions without affordable access to preventive and essential care.

Physiotherapy Mobilization and Tennis Elbow

The British Medical Journal published a study to investigate the efficacy of physiotherapy compared with a wait and see approach or corticosteroid injections over 52 weeks in tennis elbow.

The study concluded that physiotherapy combining elbow manipulation and exercise has a superior benefit to wait and see in the first six weeks and to corticosteroid injections after six weeks, providing a reasonable alternative to injections in the mid to long term.

The significant short term benefits of corticosteroid injection are paradoxically reversed after six weeks, with high recurrence rates, implying that this treatment should be used with caution in the management of tennis elbow.

For the record, Elbow manipulation was defined as physiotherapy mobilization with movement.

Chiropractic and Tinnitus

According to the May 2006 issue of Alternative Therapies in Health & Medicine, a study followed a male patient who had presented to a chiropractic office “with left shoulder and arm pain that had persisted for 6 months.

The patient was able to relieve the pain by holding his arms over and behind his head. He also complained of slight weakness in both arms with abduction to 90 degrees or greater when lifting free weights.”

Further questioning revealed that the patient also suffered from tinnitus. “He described the tinnitus as a continuous, high-pitched ringing tone in his ears, which had also persisted for 6 months. The tinnitus was aggravated by extreme right or left cervical rotation.”

The patient received chiropractic adjustments to correct vertebral subluxations detected in the upper cervical spine. Following the first treatment the patient’s tinnitus disappeared entirely for 2 days.  When the tinnitus returned “its intensity was greatly diminished.”

Following a 4-month course of chiropractic care the patient reported that aside from mild, infrequent, episodes, his tinnitus had disappeared. At one-year follow-up the patient confirmed that the results had persisted.

National Provider Identification

A reminder that the HIPAA legislation requires all health care practitioners to obtain a Nation Provider Identification, also known as an NPI.

The compliance date, May 23, 2007, is only eight months away. It is every provider’s responsibility to make sure that a National Provider Identifier (NPI) is obtained if the provider is required to do so. If you are not sure, it is time to investigate. Get your NPI now so you have time to prepare before the compliance date.

This includes sharing your NPI and appropriately testing it with payers to avoid a disruption in cash flow. To learn more on how to apply, visit www.cms.hhs.gov/NationalProvIdentStand/ on the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Web site.
