FCER Fellowships

The Foundation for Chiropractic Education and Research recognizes the need for the chiropractic profession to develop its own research infrastructure.

As such, the FCER has provided financial assistance to 148 promising scholars who had expressed a desire to study various aspects of chiropractic methods of care. FCER is therefore pleased to announce that the Foot Levelers and National Board of Chiropractic Examiners financial support of FCER’s 2006 Fellows, as well as the recipients of those awards.

In order to obtain an FCER Fellowship, applicants must show financial need in addition to providing satisfactory documentation that establishes superior transcripts; detailed, insightful and enthusiastic letters of recommendation; and a feasible, lasting interest in research. The purpose of the FCER Fellowship awards is to provide the chiropractic profession with a steady supply of high-quality, dedicated researchers and to increase the research base of the profession.

Information on FCER, its programs, funded research, products that support further research, and more may be found at www.fcer.org

Medicare fix possible by end of year

The Chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, Joe Barton (R-Texas) has said he wants to continue working on an overhaul of the Medicare physician payment system, despite the fall Congressional recess.

As you recall from earlier HealthBeat broadcasts, the ACA has been lobbying to have the proposed Fee cuts postponed and re-evaluated.

California WC reform reduces DC utilization

Use of chiropractic services for workers compensation cases in California has dropped 77 percent following the enactment of SB 228 reforms that went into effect in 2004. That bill limited chiropractic and physical therapy utilization to 24 visits each.

Immediate Effects on Neck Pain and Active Range of Motion After a Single Cervical High-Velocity Low-Amplitude Manipulation

A study in the September 2006 issue of JMPT, the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics, had the objective to analyze the immediate effects on neck pain and active cervical range of motion after a single cervical high-velocity low-amplitude (HVLA) manipulation or a control mobilization procedure in mechanical neck pain subjects. In addition, the study assessed the possible correlation between neck pain and neck mobility.

The lateral gliding test was used to establish the presence of an intervertebral joint dysfunction at the C3 through C4 or C4 through C5 levels. Subjects were divided randomly into either an experimental group, which received an HVLA thrust, or a control group, which received a manual mobilization procedure.  The outcome measures were active cervical range of motion and neck pain at rest assessed pretreatment and 5 minutes posttreatment by an assessor blinded to the treatment allocation of the patient.

The conclusion of the study suggest that a single cervical HVLA manipulation was more effective in reducing neck pain at rest and in increasing active cervical range of motion than a control mobilization procedure in subjects suffering from mechanical neck pain.

Chiropractic In The News

One of the popular US shows these days is Dancing With The Stars…. A show that features celebrities who are not dancers by profession who are teamed with professional dancers.  They then train with the professional dancers and compete over a 10-12 week period.

One of the non-professional dancers in the current Fall 2006 season is US football great Emmitt Smith.

The Oct. 10, 2006 episode highlighted Smith’s relationship with his doctor of chiropractic.  The video footage showed Smith receiving a few “minor repairs” before the week’s Samba competition.  After receiving his chiropractic treatment, Smith went on to deliver “the best samba of the night,” according to head judge Len Goodman.

And Smith isn’t the only contestant relying on the benefits of chiropractic care to stay in top dancing form.  According to a past Dancing with the Stars contestant, two of the show’s dancing professionals were both dancing injured during the Oct. 10 episode. As a result, the program producers had a chiropractor standing by just in case the women needed treatment.
