And Now for some news ….

Beware of Signing What Appear to be Official Documents

In an Email correspondence from the NJ group, the ANJC, they present a warning about carefully reviewing any documents before signing them.

Apparently, some Insurance companies are sending out what appear to be Tax forms, such as a W-9 form but are actually contracts or agreements to allow the insurance company to offer the signers services at reduced fees.

According to the Email alert, “Some of these documents, when you read the fine print, bind the signer to accept a reduced fee for your services as you stated by authorizing a third party to negotiate for you with the insurance carrier.“

The advice rendered “is to beware of any unsolicited forms you receive via fax or mail and that you must read the fine print on all documents you sign.  If you do not, you may be binding yourself to an agreement that you did not fully intend to enter.  If you ever have any question as to such a document, contact your lawyer who can refer you to an appropriate expert to assist you in this regard if it is necessary.”

Surviving a Legal Deposition

Many doctors of chiropractic are learning that the medicolegal aspects of practice are becoming more important. This is especially true when they relate to scope of practice, patient care within the confines of managed care, protecting against allegations of negligence, and how to defend themselves in court.

The FCER, the Foundation for Chiropractic Education and Research, will be conducting a Teleconference on Tuesday February 27, 2007, from 1:00pm -2:15pm, Eastern Standard Time.

Dr. Jahn, DC, MPS, FACO will provide specific answers to your questions on the deposition process. This seminar will be held by telephone conference, and here is what you will learn:

  • You will learn to identify the basics of a deposition

  • You will know how to understand the tricky question types, including suggested responses

  • You will develop a level of knowledge, comprehension, and understanding of the medicolegal system as it relates to the deposition process

  • Your skill sets in responding to questions posed in a deposition will grow and develop

The experience of participating in the deposition process can be very stressful. For more information and to learn the basics from an attorney’s perspective, surf to the FCER at – www.fcer.org

Fascia Research Congress at Harvard

"The Fascia Research Congress, to be held October 4-5, 2007 at The Conference Center, Harvard Medical School in Boston will be the first international conference dedicated to fascia in all its forms and functions.

This landmark event has been conceived and organized by a multidisciplinary committee of science researchers and practicing health care professionals whose respective fields share a common focus and interest in the human body’s soft connective tissue matrix.

The First International Fascia Research Congress is intended to be a catalyst. Its emphasis and centerpiece will be the presentation of the latest and best scientific fascia research. Professionals from the separate domains of basic research and clinical practice will have an unprecedented opportunity to learn from one another and gain insights that will inform and enrich their respective areas of work and lead to new areas of scientific inquiry and improvements in applied methods."

Manual Therapy and Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

A study published in the January 2007 issue of JMPT, the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics, to determine the clinical efficacy of manual therapy interventions for relieving the signs and symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) by comparing 2 forms of manual therapy techniques: Graston Instrument–assisted soft tissue mobilization (GISTM) and STM administered with the clinician hands.

After both manual therapy interventions, there were improvements to nerve conduction latencies, wrist strength, and wrist motion.  The improvements were maintained at 3 months for both treatment interventions.

The study concluded that although the clinical improvements were not different between the 2 manual therapy techniques, which were compared prospectively, the data substantiated the clinical efficacy of conservative treatment options for mild to moderate CTS.
