And Now for some news ….

FCER Updates Evidence Based Medicine Area

Throughout its 63-year history, the Foundation for Chiropractic Education and Research (FCER) has been the catalyst for much of the chiropractic profession’s research base—whether directly through the funding of research projects or through the building of the infrastructure which provides the talented professionals able to perform that research.

In a further effort to make sure that the lessons learned from research make it to those most affected—the practicing doctors of chiropractic and, ultimately, their patients—FCER is now providing the profession with the tools necessary to access and use scientific findings to guide them in practice.

With programs such as the “Translating Research Into Practice” regional workshops, the Conference on Chiropractic Research (CCR and ICCR internationally), the Teleconferences, access to MANTIS, and products that are consistent with evidence-based practice, FCER is now adding the FCER Member Forum.

In addition to sections for “General Discussion” and “Questions and Suggestions,” The Forum will also provide FCER members with access to experts able to answer questions related to “Insurance Reimbursement,” “Patient Education,” and “Using Research in Your Practice.”

Further, members are also able to pose questions which the Forum Administrator will route to the appropriate consultant to provide accurate information in answer to the question or discussion. Question and responses will be then be posted online and accessible to all.

United Healthcare Changes Policy

According to an FCER eBulletin, the ACA is receiving reports that United Healthcare has implemented a policy in several states to only reimburse physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R) services when performed by a licensed provider.

According to the ACA, Quote:  "PM&R services rendered by non-licensed individuals are not eligible for reimbursement, regardless of whether they are supervised by, or billed by a physician or other licensed therapy provider."

According to the eBulletin, this change is effective 1/1/07 for newly contracted providers and 4/1/07 for currently contracted providers.

As this change will greatly impact many patients and providers, the ACA is reviewing all possible legal, legislative and administrative remedies and is consulting with leading Chiropractic Associations and their counsel to strategize as to our role.

Please notify the ACA if you, or anyone you know in your state has received this notice from United Healthcare by emailing insinfo@acatoday.org

ACA to Conduct Health Professional Practice Information Survey

The ACA and more than 60 other health care professional associations will begin conducting a survey of America's health care professional practices beginning in 2007.

The purpose of the survey is to collect up-to-date information on chiropractic practice characteristics in order to develop and redefine ACA policy.  Data related to professional practice expenses will also be collected.

The survey will be sent to randomly selected members of the entire chiropractic profession to ensure accurate and fair representation for all doctors of chiropractic and their patients.

During the year 2007, you may be contacted by the Gallup Organization to participate in this study.  The ACA encourages your participation in this survey, as the data obtained will be a critical source of information for the ACA.

Should you be called upon to contribute, your participation ensures that the information collected will represent you and your patients' concerns to national policy-makers.
