And Now for some news ….

Exercise and Breast Cancer

The benefits of exercise in people with cardiovascular disease are well documented, but its effect in people with cancer is less well studied. This is largely because research into the effects of exercise in preventing and recovering from heart attacks and strokes has been studied for much longer.

In a recent study published in the British Medical Journal, a randomized controlled trial assesses the functional and psychological effects of a 12 week exercise program in women with early stage breast cancer.

It found no significant difference in the primary outcome of quality of life at 12 weeks as measured by the functional assessment of cancer therapy (FACT-G) questionnaire.

However, it did find significant improvements at 12 weeks in secondary outcomes such as the number of meters walked in 12 minutes, the amount of exercise of moderate intensity taken in one week, mobility of the shoulder, to name a few of the improvements.

Kids' Summertime Weight Gain

U.S. kids tend to gain weight over the summer, suggesting that once school's out, they may turn into couch potatoes. A study to be published in the American Journal of Public Health finds that American 5- and 6-year-olds gain more weight over the summer than during the school year. In the study, researchers looked at data on 5,380 kindergartners and first-graders in 310 schools across the country. The data came from a National Center for Education Statistics survey. The kids' body mass indexes increased twice as much over the summer as during the school year, the researchers found. Once they were back in school, the monthly growth rate of the children's BMIs dropped, the researchers found. Although the study did not identify the cause of the weight gain, the researchers say the lack of structured activities during the summer may mean young kids spend more time lounging around and snacking, The Associated Press reports.

Foundation for Chiropractic Progress

According to recent estimates the Chiropractic profession cares for only 8% of the general public. FCP hopes to create a credible and focused message, which is necessary to capture a larger share of the market. A multi-media, multi-year program is in motion that offers both national media exposure as well as local promotional support.

FCP has initiated an aggressive advertising and public relations campaign in major markets to inform, educate and stimulate the consumer public.  The primary objective is to increase market share in every Doctor of Chiropractic's office over the next decade by increasing Chiropractic exposure to the public incrementally each year as the Foundation gains participation by a wide variety of DCs.

The campaign consists of two phases.

The first, focused on research, has already been competed. The second phase that began in July 2006 includes the advertising in prominent publications throughout the country with testimonials from chiropractic patients that will convince customers to rethink established perceptions of Chiropractic.

Campaign Objectives

  • To give chiropractic more positive media exposure

  • To motivate the general public to consider and ultimately utilize chiropractic services

  • To create an identity of professionalism, which is consistent with consumer expectations

  • To increase patient visits

  • To give the chiropractic practitioner the marketing support s/he needs to build and maintain a successful practice.

The American Chiropractic Association recently took another significant step in demonstrating its support for the Foundation for Chiropractic Progress. Consistent with the resolution adopted by the ACA House of Delegates in September 2006 to contribute up to $50,000 in cash and in-kind contributions, the ACA began in February 2007 making a contribution of $1,000 per month to the Foundation.

ANJC Goes to Court

The ANJC State Board of Directors has recently voted to direct its legal counsel to file a motion for permission from the Appellate Division of the New Jersey Superior Court and filed an Amicus Curiae “friend of the court” brief in a court case that could have significant ramifications on the chiropractic profession as a whole.  As a service to its members, the ANJC monitors legal proceedings in the New Jersey Court system and takes action such as occurred in this case to prevent uninformed decisions from being issued by the courts that could adversely affect the practice of chiropractic in the State of New Jersey as a whole.

The NJ Appellate Division held that the treating chiropractor in that case did not have the requisite expertise to testify as to his patient’s MRI findings in court and that the rules of evidence required the testimony of a radiologist qualified to interpret MRI films.  Now, another case is pending on appeal addressing the same issue regarding a chiropractor’s ability to testify as to MRI scans performed on their patients in court cases.  The American Trial Lawyers Association of New Jersey has already been granted permission to file an amicus curiae brief in support of chiropractors and the ANJC will be asking permission from the court to do the same.

This appeal is not the end of the road in this case, however.  The loser at this level of appeal has the right to petition the Supreme Court of New Jersey to hear the case if they are dissatisfied with the outcome.  The Supreme Court does not have to hear the case unless the Court feels that it is an area of unsettled law that is of importance to the citizens of New Jersey or if one of the appellate judges files a dissenting opinion.

FCER Funds Upcoming Study on Maintenance Care

Thanks to generous support from the National Board of Chiropractic Examiners (NBCE), the Foundation for Chiropractic Education and Research (FCER) is pleased to announce the funding of one of the first studies on the effectiveness of chiropractic care for the prevention of chronic cervical pain.

Title: Preventive Care of Chronic Cervical Pain and Disabilities: Comparison of Spinal Manipulative Therapy and Individualized Home Exercise Programs Principal Investigator: Martin Descarreaux, D.C., Ph.D.  The study is to be conducted at the Universite du Quebec a Trois-Rivieres

Although tertiary preventive (maintenance) care is commonly practiced by chiropractors with 95% of American chiropractors believing that such care will minimize the recurrence or exacerbation of pain and symptoms, there is at present very little research to directly support this assertion.

This proposal seeks to address this problem by determining whether a preventive regime of spinal manipulation, or a home exercise program, a combination of approaches, or doing nothing following a period of intensive chiropractic care is the more efficient approach to reduce pain and increase functional capacity, quality of life, and the general health condition of patients initially complaining of chronic cervical pain.

This study will involve 105 patients who first receive 15 chiropractic adjustments using the diversified technique over a 5-week period. They are then passed into a second phase of the program which lasts 45 weeks by being randomly allocated into either:

(i)  a no-treatment group

(ii) a group receiving 15 additional chiropractic manipulations 3 weeks apart; and

(iii) manipulation plus home exercise group of 10-15 minutes on a daily basis.

Outcomes to be monitored will include pain (visual analog scale), disability (neck disability index), quality of life (SF-36), postural analysis, and various psychological measures, in addition to maximal strength in extension, flexion and lateral flexion, active range of motion in 3 planes, and a kinematic analysis of head movement.

As FCER works to provide the chiropractic profession and its practitioners with the tools to apply evidence to practice through the creation of the Evidence-Based Chiropractic Resource Center (EB-CRC), the focus on the funding of new research projects and promising young researchers has not been lost. In fact, one purpose of the EB-CRC is to improve communication between the research community and those whose livelihoods are most affected by the results, i.e., the chiropractic clinician.
