Long-Term Insurance

The NY Times recently reported on how Insurance Companies have created a system to deny the aged benefits which many felt were promised to them when they signed up for their policy.

Tens of thousands of elderly Americans have received life-prolonging care as a result of their long-term-care policies. With more than eight million customers, such insurance is one of the many products that companies are pitching to older Americans reaching retirement.

Yet thousands of policyholders say they have received only excuses about why insurers will not pay. Interviews by The New York Times and confidential depositions indicate that some long-term-care insurers have developed procedures that make it difficult — if not impossible — for policyholders to get paid. A review of more than 400 of the thousands of grievances and lawsuits filed in recent years shows elderly policyholders confronting unnecessary delays and overwhelming bureaucracies. In California alone, nearly one in every four long-term-care claims was denied in 2005, according to the state.

Report says diagnostic and chiropractic treatment drives Florida no–fault claim costs higher

Recent growth in the frequency and cost of diagnostic tests and chiropractic treatment have helped fuel rapid growth in personal injury protection (PIP) claim costs in Florida, according to a new study from the Insurance Research Council (IRC).

The study, “Florida Auto Injury Insurance Claim Environment, 2007 Final Report,” documents the use and cost of chiropractic treatment. The percentage of PIP claimants receiving chiropractic treatment grew from 33 percent in 2002 to 44 percent in 2005.

The cost implications of this trend were magnified by rapidly increasing charges from chiropractors. Average total chiropractor charges for PIP claimants grew 35 percent throughout the three-year period, from $4,837 to $6,510.

The growing utilization and cost of diagnostic services and chiropractic treatment contrast sharply with an apparent decline in the seriousness of auto injuries.

According to the study, 71 percent of PIP claimants had no disability resulting from their injuries in 2005, compared with 67 percent in 2002 and 66 percent in 1997. Seventy-three percent of PIP claimants reported a sprain or strain as their most serious injury in 2005, compared with 68 percent in 2002 and 61 percent in 1997. Fractures, lacerations, concussions, and other more serious injuries were less likely to be reported in 2005 than earlier.

Another important finding is that PIP claimants in Florida hired attorneys more frequently in 2005 than three years earlier. The study found that 45 percent of claimants in 2005 hired attorneys, compared with 34 percent in 2002. Claimants with attorneys were much more likely to receive chiropractic treatment and to have an MRI than claimants without attorneys.

OSHA releases new ‘It’s The Law’ poster

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s (OSHA) has made available a new “It’s the Law” poster.

The free poster, also known as the OSHA notice of employee rights, is required to be displayed in every workplace in the United States. Employers are not required to replace their existing poster with the new version. The poster informs employers and employees of their rights and responsibilities for a safe and healthful workplace.

Harvard Med School reports on choosing vitamins

Reports on the poor quality of over-the-counter vitamins has apparently stimulated the Harvard Medical School to issue a 48-page report, entitled “Vitamins and Minerals: What You Need to Know,” on how to choose vitamins and minerals.

Some of the tips that the report offers include:

  • Look for a seal of approval. Choose products with the U.S. Pharmacopeia Dietary Supplement Verification Program (USP-DSVP) mark, which indicates that the manufacturer has complied with certain standards

  • Consider safe levels. The report says that all dietary supplements have a “Supplement Facts” label that lists the percentage of the daily value (DV) of each nutrient per serving, as well as the actual amount of each. Multivitamin and multimineral supplements shouldn’t exceed 150 percent of the DV for any nutrient.

  • Ignore marketing gimmicks. The report says, “It doesn’t matter whether vitamin C is derived from organic rose hips or synthesized in large batches in a laboratory; your body will use the resulting product similarly.”

  • Beware of potentially dangerous interactions. Pay attention to warnings on the label, and tell your doctor and pharmacist what supplements you take.

As always, COTs HealthBeat recommends discussing all Nutritional advice with a qualified healthcare professional.

Study validates manual muscle testing

According to a new study, titled “On the Reliability and Validity of Manual Muscle Testing: A Literature Review,” which presents basic science and clinical research evidence for the reliability and validity of the manual muscle test (MMT) has been published in the Journal of Chiropractic and Osteopathy.

The study, conducted by Drs. George J. Goodheart and Scott C. Cuthbert, included results from more than 100 peer-reviewed studies related to manual muscle test and the applied kinesiology chiropractic technique (AK).

The study states that good reliability and validity exist for the use of manual muscle test for patients with neuromusculoskeletal dysfunction.

Muscle testing, which is the backbone of applied kinesiology, has been shown to be a reliable and valid method of testing NMS conditions. It now has support for its use in the field of chiropractic to diagnose and treat neuromusculoskeletal dysfunction.
