Promotes the Straighten Up Chiropractic Programs Through a series of fortuitous meetings, outreaches and a workshop in February, representatives from the chiropractic profession shared in the opportunity to turn over a new page in Indian history, the history of one billion people. This historic breakthrough was made possible by a donation from the Association of Chiropractic Colleges (ACC). Straighten Up India: Bangalore culminates a series of Straighten Up successes conducted in collaboration with the Congress of Chiropractic State Associations and funded by donations from the National Board of Chiropractic Examiners and the American Chiropractic Association. The Association of Chiropractic Colleges continues to show strong support for Straighten Up, having commended Straighten Up and its partners for spearheading the Straighten Up initiative in the US and around the world. The ACC also passed a resolution at the March 2007 ACC/RAC Conference calling on all North American chiropractic colleges to promote celebration of World Spine Day on October 16th in association with Straighten Up and the Bone and Joint Decade. Calls for Merger of ACA and ICA Discussions focused on how to help state associations address the needs of their member doctors. Currently, the profession faces challenges of national origin and scope that cry out for a unified approach towards resolution. Yet, the fractured nature of our national leadership offers no clear path for an association to take in dealing with the most pressing issues facing its members. Regrettably, in the absence of cohesive national leadership, state associations are left to grapple with these critical issues on an individual basis. The need for the chiropractic profession to speak with one voice has never been greater. The COCSA Board believes it is time to redesign the approach to leadership within the profession, and to that end, drafted the following resolution for national unity, which calls for the merger of the ACA and ICA. Chronic
Mechanical Neck Pain and Spinal Manipulation A study in the March 2007 issue of the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics provides a systematic analysis of group change scores in randomized clinical trials of chronic neck pain not due to whiplash and not including headache or arm pain treated with manual therapy. A comprehensive literature search of clinical trials of chronic neck pain treated with manual therapies up to December 2005. Only clinical trials scoring above 11.5 on the Amsterdam-Maastricht Scale were included in the analysis. The study concluded that - There is moderate- to high-quality evidence that subjects with chronic neck pain not due to whiplash and without arm pain and headaches show clinically important improvements from a course of spinal manipulation or mobilization at 6, 12, and up to 104 weeks post-treatment. The current evidence does not support a similar level of benefit from massage. to CCGPP Best Practice Document As part of COT HealthBeat’s continuing coverage of the Council on Chiropractic Guidelines and Practice Parameters (CCGPP) efforts to produce an updated Chiropractic Best Practices document, a recent email from the FCER discussed that the Introductory Chapter has been reviewed and revised. This was done to improve its clarity and readability without amending the existing research or conclusions, as necessitated maintaining the editorial independence of the project. Currently, the CCGPP is in the process of hiring a healthcare editor to further revise the "evidence synthesis" to make it more user-friendly to the profession at large. Dr. Bill Meeker and Dr. Dana Lawrence, team leads for the low back evidence synthesis chapter, are completing the review and synthesis of the commentary received. Once that commentary has been collated, it will be reviewed by the team for consideration as part of the expert opinion process. That commentary and the team response will then be included in the final version of the low back evidence synthesis. When the above 2 projects have been completed, the CCGPP will release the revised Introduction and low back evidence synthesis for final review. In light of some of the feedback the CCGPP received on review of the Low back evidence synthesis and our discussions at COCSA, the Association of Chiropractic Colleges (ACC) has expressed a desire to develop an additional chapter specifically on Subluxation. The ACC has recommended a task force comprised of representatives of each of their member chiropractic colleges be seated and chaired by Drs. Carl Cleveland and Meridel Gatterman. This team will utilize the same evidence synthesis protocols employed in the other chapters to review and rate the available subluxation literature. The board of the CCGPP sees this as a welcome addendum to our document. The dissemination, implementation, evaluation and revision (DIER) process also continues to move ahead. An initial seminar on evidence based care is currently being developed. The CCGPP is creating this seminar in conjunction with Dr. Michael Haneline with the goal of enhancing the appreciation of the field practitioner for the utilization of evidence in promoting and defending the care they provide for their patients. The CCGPP is also in discussion with the FCER on ways of partnering to promulgate the dissemination and implementation of evidence based care for the chiropractic profession. The FCER has recently published their evidence base care initiative and the CCGPP sees this partnership as a win/win for the chiropractic profession as the profession moves forward.
